Most of the doors need a 32 x 82.5 opening. I found that by putting the tile down first I needed to trim the bottom of my door frames off by 3/8 inch before proceeding.
I believe this is a 6 panel solid core door from an Illinois company called Western. We buy them from Alexander Lumber. They look like this when we get them.
Take the cardboard off. That's easiest if you do those 2x4's at the bottom of the door. They help in getting the frame off of the door too. Pop the 3 hinge pins and take the door handle hole plastic piece out too.
Set it in the opening and put shims at the very top on both sides about equal spacing on each. Take the long level and make sure top to bottom you can get it straight up and down and still have shims to the rough opening.
If you look closely, there are 2 pencil - tick marks 15" down from the top of the frame (just below the hinge if you concentrate). Both marked 15" from the top, I lay the level across there and see if I need to bump one side or the other up to get this thing level in the hole.
On the hinge side, check for plumb in every conceivable direction then put a medium size nail in the thing. Bigger than a brad, smaller than a framing nail, they're about 2" long. Nail through the shims.
Do this 3 or 4 times more on the way down...
Use a floppy saw to trim off the shims.
Hang the door back on the hinges now...
to set the other side, close the door and make sure the top and bottom meet this trim nicely.
On the inside, check the reveal is equal all the way down.. As you put in shim sets and nail, keep it consistant and not too tight to the door.
The door came with 2 color matching longer screws. I put them on the middle hole of the top two hinges. Put shims nice and snug behind AFTER you remove the short screw, before you put the long one in.
We got $17 interior door knobs - Schlage brand from Lowes.. They seem pretty good for what we do.
My door doesn't have a cut out for this part on the door, so it pops off by putting the screw driver here. Don't worry about bending things because they are a discard item.
There's my parts, time to install.
This sets right in the cut out. Use a small bit to predrill it..
Put the screws in. Snug them up, but this wood is soft so don't spin them out.
Put the latch in the hole and intersect it with the big half of the knob set.
Tap this retainer in gently making sure to not get the latch jammed up in the process.
When it's done it latches nice, looks nice..
